Willum Warrain Kitchen
June 19th, 2015 by communitykitchens

The Willum Warrain Kitchen started in term one 2015 for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community at Willum Warrain Aboriginal Association, Hastings. The Kitchen runs on Mondays from 10:30am – 1.00pm and participants all contribute to the meal in different ways including: preparing the food, setting the table, documenting the recipes and washing the dishes. All participants sit down and share the meal together and left over food is then taken home.
The Kitchen has been facilitated by a chef and they have made meals including pumpkin soup, butter chicken, chicken kebabs and lasagne. Secondbite food is used as well as fresh produce from Willum Warrain’s veggie garden. The Kitchen has been very successful with approximately 20 participants attending each week. One of the major successes of this Kitchen is the organic engagement which has occurred with participants from the Bunjilwarra program (a Koori youth drug and alcohol healing service based in Hastings) as well as the general community.
The Kitchen is planned to continue throughout the remainder of 2015 and the recipes throughout the year will be put together in a recipe book for participants including key healthy eating messages and quotes from participants.
