‘Kids in the Kitchen’ community kitchen was set up by Good Shepard Youth and Family Services at the Community House in Hastings two years ago. It is located in an area of disadvantage with many vulnerable families who regularly experience food insecurity. The program targets children and parent’s after school on a Tuesday from 3:30-5.00pm. Food is provided by Secondbite and the program focuses on teaching children basic cooking skills, making healthy food choices and providing families with healthy meals.
The program has been so successful that it moved to Westpark Primary School to utilise the larger kitchen facilities. Kids in the Kitchen currently have 20- 40 children attending the program and children take turns helping to prepare the meals. The children and parents then sit down and enjoy the meal together, taking home any left over food.
